Five Things To Know Today

Diamondback Turtles, Collectables And Boat Speed

1.  Today is Tuesday, Aug. 2. The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a high of 84 degrees and a low of 65 tonight.

2.  The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has sent out a reminder to watch out for diamondback turtles. The terrapins are active at this time of summer and are often seen in communities near the coast. Diamondbacks have a gray, light brown, or black shell with rings or ridges and live in brackish water.  Taking such a turtle home as a pet is illegal in Connecticut.

3.  The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce holds its Summer Networking on the Water event from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at 20 Academy Lane. Members are invited to watch the boats sail in, meet with executive director Kellie Wilkins-Kulick and tour a new harbor program.

4.  If you collect something unusual as a hobby, Groton Public Library is looking for collections to display in its glass cases. Past collections have included pez dispensers, wood-carved pieces and flamingos. Cases are locked, but fragile or rare items are not the right choice for the displays. To find out more, contact Barbara Candler at 860-441-6750.

5.  Two large sections of the Mystic River are now listed as “Slow-No-Wake” zones, which means boats may not travel faster than six miles per hour except to steer properly. The zones begin begins at Mouse Island and Whale Rock and continue east to the entrance between Ram Island and Masons Point. Boats must stay at the low speed until Buoy “22”, then must slow down again at Buoy “26” past Mystic Seaport to Buoy “53”.
