Five Things To Know Today

The Superintendent, Grossman's Seafood and Fort Griswold Day

1.  Today is Monday, Aug. 8. The National Weather Service predicts fog in the morning and possible thunderstorms this afternoon.  It will be sunny in the morning, then cloud up later, with a high temperature of 85 degrees and a low of 66 tonight.

2.  The Board of Education will meet in closed executive session at 7 p.m. today to discuss its annual evaluation of Superintendent Paul Kadri. Kadri was hired in 2008 after James E. Mitchell retired after 38 years with the district. Kadri signed a three-year contract with a starting salary of $165,000.

3.  Grossman's Seafood in Groton recently served 400 lobster dinners to active duty and retired military servicemen and women during its third annual "Operation Lobster Dinner." The restaurant also gave donations it received to Work Vessels for Veterans, a Noank organization that helps veterans readjust to civilian life.

4.  Colonial re-enactors will gather at Fort Griswold on Sept. 3 as part of Fort Griswold Day, a daylong event to remember the 230th anniversary of the Battle of Groton Heights. The event will include military skirmishes, horses, crafters and the Nutmeg Fife and Drums.

5.  The Groton Senior Center is hosting a program through Hospice Southeastern Connecticut called "Drawing on Our Memories" from 10:30 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday. Art materials will be provided, no artistic talent is required, and it's free. For more information, call the senior center at (860) 441-6785.
