Five Things To Know Today

Layoffs At Electric Boat, Road Projects And An Outdoor Concert

1.  Today is Thursday, Aug. 11.  The National Weather Service forecasts sunny skies, with a high temperature of 80 degrees and a low of 61 tonight.

2.  Electric Boat notified employees Monday that it will lay off 65 workers as of Oct. 7, the company told the Department of Labor. Communications Director Robert Hamilton said the employees are welders, ship fitters and electricians, and will be given access to career transition services. Last month, Electric Boat also told 104 employees at the Groton shipyard they would be laid off in September.

3.  Mayor James Streeter said he received an e-mail from Board of Education member Robert Peruzzotti asking to reconvene a group that has been dormant for awhile. The liaison committee included members of the town council, city council, representative town meeting and board of education.  Streeter suggested a joint meeting be scheduled with the town council and school board to discuss the topic.

4.  Groton will consider making road projects part of a bond proposal that could be brought to voters and paid back over time. The town's practice has been to make a list of the worst roads, then try to repair a handful by including money in the yearly budget. This year, Groton had no money to pave roads in the city, town or Groton Long Point, so the paving budget is zero. Town Manager Mark Oefinger said the town has to figure out a way out of this "tail spin." Norwich and New London have both bonded road projects.

5.  If you haven't seen an outdoor concert this year, you could try Moonlight Serenade, a performance by Glen Miller Orchestra from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. today at Harkness Memorial State Park. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door, but free for kids 12 and under.
