Quitting Smoking, An Open House And Flu Shots

1. Today is Tuesday, Oct. 4. The National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies, showers and a high temperature of 63 degrees. The low will drop to 52 tonight. 2. Students at Fitch High School who want to quit smoking will have access to a 10-week program this fall through Groton Public Schools and the Ledge Light Health District. The “Not On Tobacco” (N-O-T) program started offering sessions during school on Monday and will offer sessions after school beginning Thursday. Evening sessions will be offered from 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays on Oct. 12, 19 and 26; Nov. 2, 19, 16 and 30; and Dec. 7 and 14. The program also offers tips on stress management, problem solving and communication. 3. The New England Assistive Technology and Education Center will hold an open house at its new satellite location from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at the Lighthouse Vo-Ed Center on Plaza Court in Groton. The Department of Developmental Services will offer a presentation on Internet safety and the local police department, along with a question and answer session. 4. If you need a flu shot, a flu clinic will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Oct. 13 in the Municipal Building on Meridian Street in Groton. The cost is $15 for an injection or $20 for the nasal mist, and Anthem BC and Medicare are accepted. For more information, call Kris Magnussen at (860) 448-4882, ext. 331. The Visiting Nurse Association of Southeastern Connecticut is also offering a flu clinic at the Groton Senior Center from 9 a.m. until noon on Oct. 31. 5. The transfer station in Groton saw a 6.3 percent decline in the waste brought there from member towns during the 2011 fiscal year, the Department of Public Works said in its monthly report. The high for tonnage was in 2005, at 177,412 tons. The low was in 1994, at 102,698 tons, the report said. The tipping fee at the facility is $60 per ton, and has not changed since the 2003 fiscal year.
