Five Things To Know Today, Sept. 12

A Book Signing, A Second Submarine And A Mammography Van

1.  Today is Monday, Sept. 12. The National Weather Service forecasts partly sunny skies, showers this afternoon and a high temperature of 75 degrees. The low will fall to 61 tonight.

2.  Jonathan Safran Foer, author of "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close: a novel" will speak and sign copies of his book during an event from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. today at Fitch High School. The program is part of the One Book, One Region series, in which librarians and community members pick a book that they would like everyone to read. "Extremely Loud" is a story told through the eyes of a 9-year-old boy whose father died on Sept. 11.

3.  Electric Boat has started construction on its second Virginia-Class submarine. According to a statement from U.S. Rep. Joseph Courtney's office, 2011 marks the first time in 22 years the Navy has built two submarines in the same fiscal year. The submarine does not have a name yet. It will be the 13th boat in the Virginia-Class program, Courtney said.

4.  Yale-New Haven Hospital will bring its Digital Mobile Mammography Van to the Groton Senior Center on Wednesday, Sept. 21. The mobile unit will be open from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m, and women are encouraged to call 860 441-6785 for an appointment to have a digital mammography. The American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute recommend a yearly mammogram starting at age 40.

5.  The Mystic band "Barefoot Truth", http://www.barefoottruth.com/carry_us_on_released/, released its newest album on Sept. 5. By Thursday, it had it made to it number 10 on the iTunes Top Rock Album bestseller list. Congratulations!
