Five Things To Know Today, Sept. 14
The Mystic Education Center, U-Conn's Nursing Program And A Local History Fair

1. Today is Wednesday, Sept. 14. The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a high temperature of 75 degrees, and a slight chance of showers tonight. The low will drop to 61 degrees this evening.
2. Groton town officials will meet with the Commissioner of the State Department of Administrative Services on Monday in Hartford to discuss the status of the Mystic Education Center. A group from Groton toured the property on Aug. 19 to learn more about the campus slated for closure and the state of its buildings. The state notified Groton last month that the campus, which has housed recreation programs for years, would be shuttered to save money.
3. The University of Connecticut School of Nursing has been recognized by the National League for Nursing for promoting teaching skills and expertise of its faculty. The university is one of eight schools that will be named as a Center of Excellence at a summit on Sept. 23 in Orlando, Fla. U-Conn recently expanded its master's entry into nursing program into three campuses, including Avery Point.

4. If you're a history buff, The Second Annual Groton Local History Fair will be held from noon until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Groton Public Library. The Groton Historical Society, Mystic River Historical Society, Avery Memorial Association and Friends of Fort Griswold are among the groups expected to attend. No registration is required, and books and memorabilia will be available for sale. Proceeds from the purchases will be used to support the local historical societies.
5. The Groton Town Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration are planning another drop-off day for unused and expired prescription drugs, according to the town website. Residents can bring their leftover medication to the Groton Senior Center from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, with no questions asked.
