Five Things To Know Today, Sept. 30

The PSAT, Former Groton Schools And Late Skate

1.  Today is Friday, Sept. 30.  The National Weather Service predicts partly sunny skies and a high temperature of 75 degrees. Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with possible showers and a low of 58.

2.  The Groton Board of Education is picking up the cost for all tenth graders to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test or PSAT this fall, according to the school department's website. The test will be given during school hours, starting at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Eleventh graders are also encouraged to take the test, at a cost of $15. The website said tenth graders were offered free testing to give teachers, students and parents more information about whether students are ready for college and what areas they might study. The goal was "to encourage access and equity for more students to have the option of college upon graduation," the website said.

3.  The two task forces charged with recommending the future use of two former elementary schools - Noank School and Groton Heights School - meet next week. The Groton Heights School Reuse Task force meets at 5:30 p.m. on Monday in the Groton City Municipal Building. The Noank School Reuse Task Force meets at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Town Hall Annex. Both groups recently received the results of a resident surveys on the best future use of the properties. Both will make recommendations to the Town Council shortly.

4.  Galaxy Roller Rink in Groton is holding a "Hip Hop Lake Skate" from 7:30 p.m. on Saturday until 1 a.m. on Sunday, if the kids like to skate and stay up late. Admission is $10. To find out more, see the event listing here.

5.  Bill Memorial Library is offering "Fall Toddler Time" at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the library on Monument Street in Groton City.
