The Groton Animal Foundation, An Auction And Energy Assistance

1.  Today is Friday, Sept. 9.  The National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies this morning, then gradual clearing and a high temperature of 78 degrees. There's a chance of rain tonight, and the low will drop to 61.

2.  The Groton Animal Foundation will host a wine tasting from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sept. 17  at the Shennecossett Yacht Club to raise money for Groton animals. The event includes food, raffles and a DJ. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

3.  Groton will hold an auction at 10 a.m. on Sept. 17 to sell surplus items and property found by the Groton Police Department, including bikes, purses, backpacks, radios, tools, cell phones and skateboards, according to the town website. The town is also seeking bids for large items including a Ford Explorer, table saw and golf course mowers. The auction will be held in a bay at the back of the Groton Highway Garage on Groton Long Point Road. All the items must be removed the day of the auction, the website said.

4.  Northeast Utilities Companies will hold a series of forums to offer information about energy assistance and other programs to residents. More than 600 agency representatives, including those from Connecticut Light & Power, Yankee Gas, Operation Fuel, state and non-profit agencies will attend. The local session will be held from 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 12 at the Mystic Hilton.

5. The Department of Social Services Rx-Express Bus, will be in Groton from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Sept 22, if you need some extra help. Appointments are recommended, and can be made by calling (860) 441-6760. The bus offers staff to help residents apply for programs such as Food Stamps, Medicaid, Medicare and Husky Insurance.
