Surplus Sale Coming Up, Vouchers For Pet Sterilization And Vaccination, Will Juno Remember The Mariachi Band She Loved So Much?

1. Today is Thursday, August 25. Rain and thunderstorms are predicted for after noon, according to the National Weather Service, and showers and thunderstorms are likely after 9 p.m.

2. Groton is holding its yearly surplus property sale at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17. The sale auctions off property that police have found during the year, like bicycles, wallets, purses and jewelry.  The town's also auctioning off some shop equipment like saws, a Toro fairway mower, metal chairs and a commercial stove, according to a report by the town manager.

3. “Los Trovadores de America,” the mariachi band that became a YouTube sensation after serenading Juno, a 9-year-old beluga whale at the Mystic Aquarium, returns tonight for the final Cocktails with the Whales happy hour event at the aquarium. The event is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Los Trovadores de America will play from 7-7:15 p.m.

4. Today and Friday is freshman orientation at Fitch High School from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Freshmen will meet new teachers and classmates and have a tour of the school, and learn where their classes and lockers are. Activities are planned and transportation is provided, click here for the bus route.

5. The state Department of Agriculture is offering a voucher for pet vaccination/sterilization to low-income applicants. The voucher is for $50 for male cats, $70 for female cats, $100 for male dogs and $120 for female dogs. Use of the voucher also entitles the pet owner for free rabies and distemper vaccinations for the pet.
