Major Fire Displaces Numerous Residents In Groton, Police Say

Two residents were trapped on the 4th floor and were rescued by the fire department.

GROTON, CT — A major fire broke out at Groton Towers at 39 Broad Street Extension Saturday afternoon, according to police.

At 4:52 p.m. emergency crews responded to a report of a structure fire with entrapment. Upon arrival, crews saw "large clouds of dark-colored smoke" coming from the side of the building, police said.

Police and firefighters helped evacuate residents as "flames and smoke came out of the third and fourth floor."

Two residents were trapped on the 4th floor and were rescued by the fire department.

Multiple residents were taken to the hospital for treatment. The Red Cross responded to help residents who were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The City of Groton Firefighters Union said the Groton City Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire on the third floor at Groton Towers, with reports of multiple entrapments. After arriving on scene, a second-then a third alarm structure fire was declared, officials said.

"The fire displaced numerous residents, and our thoughts are with all those affected as they begin the recovery process," the fire union wrote. "We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all our mutual aid partners for their quick response and assistance in helping to control and extinguish the fire."
