Obituary: Joan Phyllis Carroll Czmyr, 75, of Groton

Joan Phyllis Carroll Czmyr, age 75, of Groton, died Friday, April 7, 2016, at Fairview in Groton.

She was born in New London on August 27, 1940, the daughter of Napoleon and Constance Smith Carroll. She was a graduate of Griswold High School, and a veteran of the Vietnam War. Joan had served in the United States Marine Corps. She retired from the United States Army, as Sgt. 1st class. Joan had also worked at Seaside, Uncas on Thames Hospital and had been a teacher's aide.

She is survived by three sons and their wives, Mark (Trish) Czmyr of Griswold, Luke (Meg) Czmyr of Jewett City, and John (Audrey) Czmyr of Griswold; a brother Charles (Carol) Carroll, Sr. of North Windham; six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She was predeceased by her step-sister Carol (Mecteau) Davis of Plainfield she is also survived by her step-brother Harry Mecteau of Norwich.

A military graveside service will be conducted on Friday, June 3, 2016 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Cemetery, Lisbon. There are no calling hours.

Immediately following the service at the cemetery, a gathering of family and friends will be held at The American Legion Post 15, 7 South Main St. Jewett City.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fairview Oddfellows Home, 235 Lestertown Rd., Groton, CT 06340. The Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home is assisting the family.
