Plans Underway to Resolve Traffic Problems Near Naval Submarine Base: Report
Officials say the $5.5 million improvement plan will help solve serious traffic and public safety issues.

GROTON, CT — Plans to address public safety and traffic management problems near the Naval Submarine Base are now underway, reports The Day. The $5.5 million reconstruction project will widen both Military Highway and Crystal Lake Road, realign the two roads, include a new traffic signal and create a bike and pedestrian pathway.
According to town manager Mark Oefinger, the opening of the Submarine Force Library & Museum made Crystal Lake Road a "glorified driveway for the base," according to the report. The congestion has caused serious safety issues, notably in 2016 when a man crashed into the base's main gate while leading police on a high-speed chase.
The project is primarily funded by federal money, with the state and town contributing 10 percent.
