Want To Beat Breast Cancer? Walk With Me.

Letter To The Editor From Claudia Marks, A Daughter, Mom, Breast Cancer Survivor And Volunteer.

Dear Editor and Patch readers:

I am walking to raise money for the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation, a local not for profit.  I am now working with the Foundation and am amazed at the success this organization has had in its first 5 years.  In that time, they have raised $1.8M and made grants to 18 promising breast cancer researchers from such organizations as Dana Farber, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Yale Medical School, Harvard Medical School, and Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory.  What is so great is that 100% of gross fund raising dollars goes directly  to breast cancer research!  So every dollar you raise to support your own walk or contribute to a walker, goes directly to fund research!!  Amazing!

I am a two time breast cancer survivor and lost my mother to breast cancer when she was 50, I was 23, and lost my first cousin when she was 42 and I was in chemo/radiation for my first occurrence.  This is an important event to raise money for research which will give my two girls and others hope for the future.

  • Full Marathon Walk - 26.2 miles from Old Saybrook to Camp Harkness in Waterford where you raise at least $500 - amazing in one day
  • Super Half Marathon Walk - 15 miles from Old Saybrook to Rocky Neck where you raise at least $250
  • Quarter Marathon Walk - 6.55 miles within Old Saybrook where you raise at least $200

The walks start at the Old Saybrook Point Pavilion at 7:00 am after opening ceremonies at 6:30 am. The opening ceremonies are quite moving. Terri Brodeur's children speak about their experience losing their mother to breast cancer at a young age.

Please check it out on:  www.tbbcf.org to register or volunteer for the day of the walk.

Thank you to those who have already registered for the walk and have supported the walk in previous years.

Please let me know if you want to walk and we can make plans to meet that morning and walk together - even if you go on for more miles than I will be doing - we can walk the first 6+ together.  Register by September 1 to ensure you get a T-shirt.

Thank you so much,

Claudia Marks
