GUILFORD, CT – Guilford Police said they are investigating three incidents of purse snatchings over the past couple of weeks.

“We are working diligently with other public safety partners throughout the state of Connecticut trying to see if we can bring our cases to resolution and help any other departments working similar cases,” Deputy Chief Christopher Massey said.

Massey said the three incidents occurred at the Shell Gas Station off Exit 57.

“Unfortunately, gas stations are an easy target for people going around stealing purses out of cars while folks are at the pumps filling up their vehicles,” he said. “Expect to see an increased presence at the gas stations.”

Massey said in all cases, the victims had paid for the gas and were outside their vehicles pumping gas while their valuables were on the car's front passenger seat.

“Essentially, it’s different vehicles and potentially different subjects every time. We are investigating,” he said. “Someone would come to the parking lot while the owner is out of the car; they would get in the car from the passenger side, grab the purse and take off in a vehicle.”

Massey said at least two of the incident involved a stolen motor vehicle, and it is highly likely the third incident also involved a stolen motor vehicle.

“It is an increasing trend across the state,” Massey said. “I know of multiple towns where the suspects hitting the gas station on Exit 57 are also involved in other incidents around the state. So it’s not unique to Guilford, but these locations are easier targets for someone to do this type of activity.”

Massey said when people are at a gas station, a good tip is to keep valuables hidden while at the pumps and keep cars locked.

“This way, someone can’t get in the car and get access to whatever you have in there,” he said.

Another tip is for those at the pumps to be attentive and aware of their surroundings.

“In one of the incidents, a vehicle circled the parking lot before the theft,” Massey said. “If people spot suspicious activity while being vigilant, please contact the police immediately so we can respond.”

Massey said not to engage with any suspects because safety is the primary priority.

“Be a good witness and be prepared to give us a physical description of the suspect and the vehicle,” he said.
