First Selectman Matt Hoey said it's been "exciting" to see construction progress over the last year. He said the retailer's entry into Guilford is a welcomed sight.

"I'm thrilled a retailer of Target's reputation and quality has chosen Guilford to locate a store. We are, I would suggest, in dire need of that kind of store once Walmart pulled out," Hoey told Patch on Tuesday, noting that "a good number" of residents have had to travel to nearby towns to shop at large department stores.

"There will be less miles and less pollution because people will be able to stay local and buy local," he added.

Hoey also said residents have been looking for a Starbucks to open up again in Guilford "for quite some time."
