Q: What Is That Big Mountain Growing Near The Madison-Guilford Town Line?

This article was written by Pem McNerny.

A: It is a pile of crumbled up asphalt that has been ripped up from I-95. It's being stored on a lot across from the Comfort Inn at 300 Boston Post Road in Guilford until the contractor, American Industries, Inc. of Jewett City, CT, can transport it back to their headquarters to be recycled and used in other projects that allow for recycled asphalt.

Jon Vercellone, general manager at American Industries, said the asphalt comes from a project that eventually will result in new pavement on I-95 between Old Saybrook and Madison, going both north and south.

And, if you're wondering about those signs, they are a way of asking the truck drivers to be considerate of their surroundings and to not be too loud when unloading. A jake brake is truck industry slang used for a brake that is really loud.

So when truck drivers don't use their jake brake and don't bang their tailgates, that's a good thing, particularly for any folks over at the Comfort Inn who might be taking an afternoon nap.
