Stony Creek Granite to be Featured at Guilford Art Center
Stony Creek Granite will be featured at Guilford Art Center starting May 3 through June 2. The opening reception for the exhibit, 'Sculpture in Stone' will be held May 3 and is free and open to the public.
The following is a press release from Guilford Art Center:
Guilford Art Center is pleased to announce Sculpture in Stone: Featuring Stony Creek Granite, highlighting contemporary art works created from this unique, indigenous material by local artists who are active with the Center’s stone carving program.
The exhibit will be on view in the gallery May 3-June 2, 2013. Guilford Art Center has an active stone-carving sculpture program, led by internationally-renowned artist Darrell Petit, where artists create work on all scales and exploring a myriad of themes.
Petit and his artists work mainly with the unusual pink granite of Stony Creek, first quarried in 1858 and used to create buildings and monuments throughout the world including the sculptural pedestal of The Statue of Liberty, designed by Richard Morris Hunt, The West Point Victory Monument, designed by McKim, Meade and White, and The Family, sculptor Isamu Noguchi's first large scale sculpture commission for the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company headquarters, designed by Gordon Bundshaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Stony Creek granite is still actively quarried and sought-after, and favored by artists as a medium for sculptural expression.
Sculpture in Stony Creek Granite is organized by Darrell Petit. Artists exhibiting work are Rosemary Cotnoir, Andy Davis, Lee Ellison, Steve North, Rod Recor, Bill Ruffer, and the estate of Larry Smith.
The opening reception for the Sculpture in Stone is Friday, May 3, 5-7pm. The opening is free and open to the public. Admission to the exhibition is free. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday 10am-4pm, Sunday 12-4pm.
