Burglary Suspect Kicked, Spit on Officer

A Hamden man arrested on a warrant last Thursday in connection with a February burglary assaulted the police officer bringing him to headquarters to be booked, according to police.

On March 7 police arrested Theodore Hawley, 40, of 11 Dix St. in connection with the Feb. 21 burglary when Hawley allegedly broke into a home because the resident owed him money.

On that day at about 6:30 p.m. police got a report of a burglary at 1054 Dixwell Ave., according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith. Investigating officers determined that Hawley forced his way into the home by kicking in the door. Hawley had taken off before police arrived, Smith said.

Officer Bryan Kelly submitted an arrest warrant application to the court for Hawley's arrest that was approved by the court, Smith said.

Last Thursday police went to Hawley's Dix Street home on an unrelated complaint, Smith said, and served him the warrant. 

"While en route to police headquarters, Hawley began yelling obscenities and vulgarly degrading the transporting officer’s family," Smith said. "He then began kicking the rear door in an attempt to escape.

"The officer was forced to stop the police vehicle in an attempt to calm Hawley," according to Smith. "Hawley then kicked the officer. As the officer continued to transport Hawley to police headquarters, he spit in the officers face."

Hawley was charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree breach of peace, assault on a police officer, interfering with a police officer and two counts of refusal to be fingerprinted.

Hawley was held in lieu of $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on March 18.
