Cops: Daughter Stops Father from Attacking Mother

A Hamden man allegedly got violent after an argument with his wife, according to police, but his daughter was able to stop the attack.

A Hamden man was arrested Sunday after he threatened to stab his wife and his daughter had to intervene to stop the assault, according to police.

Jose Rios, 46, of 178 West Side Drive, Hamden, was charged with second-degree strangulation, first-degee reckless endangerment, third-degree assault, second-degree threatening and disorderly conduct after the 10:30 a.m. incident, according to Hamden Police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith. 

Hamden Police responded to 178 West Side Drive on thereport of a domestic dispute involving a knife, Smith said, where officers Rios and his wife involved in an argument which became physical.

"Officers learned that Rios was choking his wife while she was attempting to get help by placing her hands through a 'cat door.'" Smith said. "Their daughter intervened, stopping the assault.

"Moments later, Jose Rios grabbed a butcher knife, which had a 10 inch blade, and threatened to stab his wife," Smith said. "Their daughter was able to gain possession of the knife."

Rios was held in lieu of $100,000 bond and was arraigned in Meriden Superior Court the next day.

Officer Stephen Baris conducted the investigation, Smith said.
