Press release from Hamden Public Library:

July 26, 2022

Based on her own family’s experience of navigating life in the United States as a member of the Ojibwa nation, Louise Erdrich’s historical novel "The Night Watchman" tells the story of the Turtle Mountain Reservation rebellion against the Congress’s 1953 decision to dissolve the legal and cultural dominion of 113 tribal nations by saying that the people living within these nations and their reservation would fall under United States legal jurisdiction. This meant that centuries of legal heritage and governance were terminated. This era in history became known as the Termination Era, as the U.S. government tried to terminate the sovereignty of tribes in had once deemed to be independent nations.
