Muriel Kaltman of Atria Larson Place, Hamden, formerly of Fountain Street, New Haven, passed away peacefully on Sept. 14, 2013 after an extraordinary summer of hospitalizations.
She was the daughter of Bessie Edison Kaltman and Samuel Kaltman and is survived by one adult daughter and fiancee' who live in Nashua, NH. Her daughter remained close and extraordinarily attentive to her mother's needs throughout her life.
Muriel was a unique woman of many talents. She composed poetry in her early years, wrote imaginative children's stories that included her own hand-drawn, colorful illustrations in her later years, and painted with oil.
Her main love was classical music, particularly playing her baby grand piano that she received from her parents at age 10. She enjoyed opera and her trips to the Metropolitan Opera in New York City brought her enormous joy.
She was happiest in her teen years when she lived in Asheville, North Carolina where her family was friends with Thomas Wolfe, the writer. Asheville is a beautiful place with clean air and views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was there she developed a love for nature and natural phenomena which she retained throughout her life.
She loved to travel, especially to Europe and had particularly fond memories of her trips to England and Iceland.
Funeral services are at the Robert Shure Funeral Home, 543 George St., New Haven, on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m.. Family and friends will be gathering on Wednesday, Sept. 18 from 6-8 and Thursday, Sept. 19 from 2-4 p.m. at Atria Larson Place, 1450 Whitney Ave., Hamden, in the private dining room.
Donations in Muriel's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
