Hamden Police Warn Residents About Burglaries

There's been an increase in burglaries over the past several months, and police are issuing tips to residents to keep it from happening to them.

 

A rash of burglaries over the past three months has prompted police to issue a warning to residents to take precautions to avoid becoming a victim.

"Since November 2012, the Hamden Police Department has investigated a rash of residential burglaries," police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith said Thursday in a release. "The burglaries, which are primarily occurring during daytime hours, have been reported in the area of Benham Street to the New Haven city line.

Smith said he recommends residents take the following precautions:

  • Lock all doors and windows. Use dead-bolts if available.
  • Install an alarm system.
  • Install security lighting and motion detectors if available.
  • Some lighting should be on timers.
  • Valuables should not be in plain view.
  • Trim bushes and shrubs around window areas.
  • Remove ladders and other items from yard. These tools are used by some individuals to gain entry.
  • Use surveillance camera.

Residents are also encouraged to establish a Neighborhood Watch Program. The Hamden Police Department can assist residents in creating this type of program.

Most importantly, residents should contact the Hamden Police Department at 203-230-4000,immediately if they observe suspicious activity, Smith said.
