CT CHCs Serve 1 in 8 Connecticut Residents, Reflecting Surging Demand

An 18% increase in patients served over the past five years

Press release

Hartford, CT - August 7, 2025 - Connecticut’s 17 Community Health Centers delivered high-quality medical, dental, and behavioral health care to 452,000 patients. This represents 1 in 8 people across the state, which is an 18% increase in patients served over the past five years. Collectively, the CT CHCs recorded 2.5 million visits, including both in-person and telehealth appointments.

The data comes from newly analyzed information of the 2024 Uniform Data System, which tracks community health center performances nationwide. The findings underscore the critical role health centers play in ensuring high-quality, accessible care for individuals and families across Connecticut and the United States.

Connecticut’s Community Health Centers serve the state’s most diverse and vulnerable populations. In 2024, 80% of patients at Connecticut’s CHCs identified as racial or ethnic minorities, with 53% identifying as Hispanic or Latino. Nearly 70% of patients lived below the federal poverty line, and 36% were best served in a language other than English. In terms of insurance coverage, 58% of patients were enrolled in Medicaid, 17% had commercial insurance, 15% were uninsured, and 9% were covered by Medicare.

The numbers not only demonstrate that the Community Health Centers are critical and trusted health care providers in Connecticut; they are also major employers. In 2024, nearly 5,000 staff members worked at the state’s 17 Community Health Centers. Across the state, CHCs contribute significantly to both the health and economic stability of the communities they serve.
“This growth reflects the increasing demand for accessible care across Connecticut. Our Community Health Centers continue to improve health care access for residents across the state. In the past year, new services have been added, new sites have opened in communities and schools, and additional mobile vans have gotten on the road to provide health care to people where they live and congregate,” said Shawn K. Frick, CEO of the Community Health Center Association of Connecticut. “We also are proud of the high-quality care and personal attention that health centers provide to their patients. Moreover, they are economic drivers in their communities. We thank the 452,000 health center patients, and the 5,000+ employees and health center board members, for their commitment to improving Connecticut’s health and wellbeing.”
