Hartford Metals Company To Lay Off Dozens Of Workers By Year's End

The German-based company announced the layoffs at its Hartford facility, resulting in union and non-union job losses.

HARTFORD, CT — For 51 employees of a Hartford manufacturer/recycler of metal alloys, this Christmas will be their last one employed at the company.

That's because officials with ELG Utica Alloys, which operates a facility at 239 West Service Road, Hartford, announced Friday, Oct. 31, it was ceasing some operations at its Hartford site at year's end.

According to a company notification to the state Department of Labor and the City of Hartford, ELG cited a "business decision" for its planned job cuts.

That "decision," according to ELG, means the discontinuation of the company's "solids processing operations."

This will result, according to the announcement, in 41 union workers and 10 non-union employees losing their jobs effective Dec. 31.

Among the positions to be slashed are machinists, maintenance mechanics, clerks, coordinators, managers, and assistants.

According to ELG Utica Alloys' website, the company "processes, sources and supplies high-performance alloys and metals for our customers across the globe."

Specifically, the company serves the "aerospace, power generation, and oil and gas industries."

ELG is based in Duisburg, Germany, and operates nine other locations worldwide.

Jan Hofmann, chief executive officer of Aperam Recycling out of Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, which owns ELG, said eliminating the Hartford operation better prepares the company for the future, with work done in Hartford now slated to be done in Germany.

“While decisions that impact our operations and people are never taken lightly, this transition reflects our commitment to investing in future growth and innovation. The new Center of Excellence will serve as a hub for best-in-class operations,” wrote Hofmann in a release last week.
