WEST HARTFORD/HARTFORD, CT — The president of the University of Hartford has announced he is retiring over the summer.

According to an announcement posted on the school's website late last week, UHart President Gregory Woodward said his contract is up in June and he will retire.

“It is after deep thought and reflection that I share my decision to retire at the end of my contract in June,” said Woodward in a statement Friday afternoon. “I am extremely proud of the work that I have led here at UHart specifically—and of what we have accomplished together.”

Woodward said he has worked in higher education for 45 years.

The university Friday cited multiple changes on Woodward's watch, including a new engineering and health profession education facility; $47.5 million in capital improvements on campus, which is located in parts of Hartford, West Hartford and Bloomfield; and a transition to Division III athletics after being in Division I for decades.

This has been unpopular among some sports supporters, but UHart officials claim it better aligns "athletics offerings with the institution’s mission and goals, while increasing opportunities for more student-athletes and offering more robust recreation and wellness programming for all students."

UHart's sixth president, Woodward began his term July 1, 2017 and is "a composer, musician, and scholar, he has worked in almost every conceivable role in higher education."

The school's board of regents will be issuing more information in coming weeks about finding Woodward's successor.
