The main event is, of course, Trucks! There is no better way to spend a day with your children than at the East Lyme Parks and Recreation and Thames West Auxiliary of Child & Family Agency’s Touch a Truck on Saturday, May 21, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at McCook Point Park in Niantic. There will be a Horn Free Hour from 9 to 10 a.m. especially for the younger set and for noise-sensitive children.
This year, there will be many new vehicles.

Flanders Fire Department will be there with their aerial ladder truck and smoke truck and Niantic Fire Department will be bringing their Ambulance and Pumper engine. Guy’s Oil Services will have a Hino Flatbed truck and a brand new 2022 Oil Truck. This list is just a “teaser”; we will have about 45 vehicles for the children to explore.
It takes a large team to put the East Lyme Touch A Truck together. Dave Putnam’s Parks & Rec Department Head serves as the lead. He and his crew ready the park for the event and also bring their array of vehicles as well as enticing East Lyme Public Works trucks to join them. Members of the Thames West Auxiliary of Child & Family Agency publicize the event, acquire program advertising, solicit new trucks and welcome former participants to return. They work with Dave Putnam to map out the location for each truck and are on hand to welcome the trucks and to direct them to their designated spots early on Saturday morning. On the day of the event, members of the Auxiliary staff the gates and parking lots and provide refreshments for the truckers and volunteers.
The requested donation is $5 per person with children under age two admitted free of charge. Proceeds benefit the work of Child & Family Agency of Southeastern CT as it annually meets the needs of over seventeen thousand children and their families in our communities.
