MERIDEN, CT — The 2025 municipal election is heating up in Meriden with plenty of races on the ballot.
Voters will cast their ballots in the Nov. 4 election for the position of mayor, along with seats on the City Council and Board of Education.

Migdalia Alicea is running for election to the Meriden Board of Education as a Democrat. She has also been endorsed by the Working Families Party.

Yes, I have a wonderful family. I am a wife, a mother of three amazing children, and a proud grandmother. My family is central to my life, and they inspire me every day to give back to my community and work toward creating a better future for others.
Does anyone in your family work in politics or government?
No- and it was actually discouraged in my family. We were raised in a community that did not believe that their vote mattered. I'm hoping to change that.

Why are you seeking this office?
I’m seeking a position on the Board of Education because I want to give back to the Meriden community that has supported me for so many years. I’ve seen the challenges our students and educators face every day. I want to use my experience and voice to help ensure every child has access to quality education, resources, and opportunities to succeed. Serving on the Board would allow me to continue advocating for equity, inclusion, and a strong partnership between families, schools, and the community.

The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ensuring every student has equal access to quality education. I intend to advocate for more resources, stronger family-school partnerships, and a safe, inclusive environment where all students can succeed.
What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?
The major difference between me and the other candidates is my deep, long-term connection to the Meriden community and my hands-on experience working directly with children, families, and schools for years. I understand the challenges our families face and have spent my career helping them navigate resources and systems. My approach is grounded in empathy, collaboration, and a true commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed.
What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?
Along with promoting equity in education, I plan to support teachers and work to expand enrichment programs, improve mental health resources, and strengthen school-family partnerships.
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?
I have spent years working with children, families, and schools, helping them navigate challenges and access the resources they need. In my current role, I’ve learned how to listen, problem-solve, and advocate effectively. My experience has taught me how to adapt, collaborate, and find solutions that truly serve people. These are skills I believe are essential for serving on the Board of Education.
What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?
The best advice anyone ever gave me was to never forget where I came from and to use my experiences to lift others up. It reminds me to stay grounded, lead with empathy, and always keep my community at the heart of everything I do.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?
I want voters to know that my dedication to Meriden runs deep. Through years of experience supporting children and families, I understand their needs and the importance of strong schools. I’m committed to ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed by promoting equity, inclusion, and strong communication between schools and families. I will always listen, advocate, and work hard for what’s best for our students.
