Connecticut State Police Union Calls For Leadership Resignation
Connecticut State Police released a statement on Aug. 10 calling for Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner to resign.
MIDDLETOWN, CT – Connecticut State Police Union released a statement on Aug. 10, saying Union leadership held an emergency meeting to hold a vote of no confidence for the position of Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of the State Police.
“After careful consideration, the Union leadership has overwhelmingly voted that we no longer have any confidence in the leadership of you [Commissioner James Rovella] or Colonel (Stravos) Mellekas,” the statement reads. “You do not possess the character or leadership skills necessary to lead us into the future, and we ask that you either resign or that the Governor find a suitable replacement.”
The Union stated since the appointment of Commissioner Rovella, he’s fostered an environment of mistrust and complete disregard for the union contract and has relied upon the advice and counsel of incompetent staff, who have continuously leaked embarrassing information to the press, and he doesn’t realize their role is to support and advocate the troops.

“One of the first mistakes you made was when you allowed the revocation of basic standards for the Sargent’s examination process, which we challenged the courts ruled that your actions discriminated against your members and violated Law,” the statement reads. “Additionally, you have shown favoritism and unequal treatment with the enforcement of policy and law when you have intervened in several investigations of personnel close to you. Both your actions and inaction obstructed these investigations to ensure your desired outcome.”
The Union stated that to survive and grow as an agency, its Troopers and the public must have trust and confidence in the leadership.

“We no longer have any confidence in you or Colonel Mellekas, who stood by idly as you allowed others to publicly make false allegations, destroy the morale of our Troopers and dismantle the reputation of the State Police. How could anyone work for a Commissioner and Colonel who choose their own survival over standing up for due process and the good men and women that risk their lives for the State of Connecticut.”
