MIDDLETOWN, CT — A driver reported being carjacked overnight in Middletown, according to police, who said the vehicle was found crashed in an embankment shortly afterward.

The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. Sunday on the Route 17 Connector, Middletown police said. The driver of a 2021 Volkswagen Jetta had left a business in the 200 block of South Main Street and turned onto the connector when two males in ski masks “appeared” in his back seat, assaulted him, forced him from the car and drove away, according to police.

The driver walked to the intersection of Crescent and Main streets and called police, authorities said. He was able to track the car and reported it was still in the area where it was stolen, according to police, who found it down an embankment east of the connector. The car had crashed through a guardrail when the operator was trying to merge onto Route 9 North while speeding, police said.
