MIDDLETOWN, CT — A postal service employee was attacked by a dog while delivering mail in Middletown Monday afternoon, police said.

At 4:15 p.m., Middletown police responded to a home on the 100 block of Barbara Road for a dog bite.

When they arrived, officers found a 47-year-old resident of the home providing medical aid to another man in the front yard, according to an incident report. The 48-year-old had suffered multiple dog bites that included his left thigh, left wrist, right forearm, lower abdomen and the back of his head, according to an incident report.

Officers assisted with treating the injured man until a Middletown fire crew and Hunter's Ambulance personnel arrived, according to an incident report. The man was subsequently transported to Hartford Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, according to an incident report.

A preliminary investigation determined that the injured man is a United States Postal Service employee who was delivering mail to the residence, police said. Witnesses indicated that the family dog, a 5-year-old male pit bull, forced a storm door open and attacked the postal worker in the front yard.

The dog was transported to the Middletown Police animal shelter, where he will remain isolated and quarantined while the case investigated, police said.
