Middletown High Senior Earns $2K McDonald House Scholarship

Karla Lazo was one of only 25 nationwide winners of a $2,000 scholarship from Connecticut and Western Massachusetts by the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Karla Lazo, a senior at Middletown High School, was selected as one of 25 winners of a $2,000 scholarship from Connecticut and Western Massachusetts by the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

RMHC awards these scholarships to deserving seniors from the region, according to the McDonalds Corporation.

Lazo, who is the daughter of Ruth Ona of Grand Street, will attend the University of Connecticut to study accounting.

While at MHS, she took all advanced level courses and also took Advanced Placement United States History and AP French.

She held part-time jobs at the YMCA and through the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, she also worked for the North End Action Team.

She was a member of the MHS cooperative work program. Her extra-curricular activities include DECA, Future Business Leaders of America and the Key Club. She was selected by the faculty to the Eleanor Riordon Chapter of the National Honor Society at MHS. She did volunteer work at KidCity Museum, the Russell Library, the Amazing Grace Food Pantry and at St. John's Church.
