Obituary: Lucille (Calbert) Byrd, 82, of Middletown
Lucille was an active volunteer and member of the community. She worked many years in healthcare and cherished her time with loved ones.
MIDDLETOWN, CT - (From Doolittle Funeral Home) Lucille (Calbert) Byrd, 82, of Middletown, CT, passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2022, in her home with her loving family by her side.
Born in Winston Salem, N.C. on May 8, 1939, she was raised by her grandmother, Lizzie Calbert. Lucille moved to Connecticut at a young age, where she met and later married her late husband of 61 years, William Byrd, Sr. Lucille worked at Sanibel Convalescent Home, Middlesex Memorial Hospital and Wadsworth Glenn.
In her spare time, she enjoyed solving word searches, crossword puzzles, and building a collection of beautiful angels to keep on display. She also spent a lot of time caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lucille was a valued member of Cross Street AME Zion Church and was actively involved in various volunteer activities within the church community. On October 20, 2018, Lucille was awarded the She-Roes Award from the Women’s Ministry of Cross Street Church.
Those left to honor her memory are her two sons Richard Byrd and his wife Michelle of Middletown, and Michael Byrd and his companion Cathryn Franklin of Middletown; her niece Doris Calbert-Shabazz of East Granby, and nephew Clarence (Tony) Calbert of East Windsor; her two brother-in laws, Howard Byrd of Middletown and Mark Byrd of Springfield, Massachusetts; her sister-in-law Bishop Jean (Byrd) Taylor of Middletown; her seven grandchildren, Byron Young, Matia Byrd, Cassius Byrd, Shaun Byrd, Anthony Byrd, Amanda Byrd and Angela Byrd, and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and countless family friends. Lucille was predeceased by her loving husband William Byrd Sr. her son, William H. Byrd Jr. both of Middletown, her brother Clarence Calbert of Bloomfield, and her niece Harriet Calbert of Weatogue.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 3rd at 11:00 am at Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church Street, Middletown. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
Family and friends may call on Thursday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lucille’s memory may be made to Cross Street AME Zion Church 440 West Street, Middletown, CT 06457.
