Milford Hospital Nurses Recognized With Prestigious Award

Four Milford Hospital nurses were selected as recipients of the 2015 Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing.

Cristina Ayala, Registered Nurse, Gemma DeGuzman, Registered Nurse with a Bachelor’s in Science of Nursing, Melissa Hinckley, Registered Nurse with Bachelor’s in Science of Nursing and Stacy Plaskowitz, Registered Nurse, were honored for their professional achievements at an awards dinner and program held at Anthony’s Ocean View in New Haven on May 6.

Each of the honorees was nominated by their peers for the 2015 Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing. Criteria for the award is demonstrated clinical excellence and having gone above and beyond the call” in their daily professional duties.

“We are very proud to recognize the accomplishments of these nurses,” Joseph Pelaccia, President/CEO of Milford Hospital, said. “Each of the awardees is extremely dedicated to the care of our patients and advancing the nursing profession. It is a well-deserved recognition for our outstanding Milford Hospital nurses.”

During her 7 years at Milford Hospital, Ayala has demonstrated a true compassion for her patients. She remains positive and calm despite any circumstances that may arise, according to a release from the hospital. She is flexible and adapts to the regular changes in the healthcare system. According to her nomination “Cristina goes above and beyond to bring knowledge, comfort and support to her patients and their families. Throughout their stay, she ensures that everyone is kept comfortable and well informed.”

Gemma DeGuzman, RN, BSN, has vast clinical knowledge and experience as a medical surgical nurse. Currently, caring for joint replacement patients, Gemma has been at Milford Hospital since 2003, according to a release from the hospital. She is an “astute” nurse with a strong background in nursing policies and procedures which benefits her patients and her peers. Gemma’s nomination states that she “demonstrates everyday, in her delivery of care, Milford Hospital’s philosophy of teamwork and excellence always.”

Melissa Hinckley, RN, BSN, serves in the Milford Hospital Emergency Department. Even during the most stressful of situations, Melissa demonstrates the ability to function in a charge nurse role and offers support and assistance to her peers, according to a release from the hospital. She is well respected by her fellow nurses and physicians. Melissa goes above and beyond in creating an atmosphere for patients and their families “which minimizes delays and instills trust and confidence.”

Stacy Plaskowitz, RN, is recognized by her colleagues for her dedication to the nursing profession and her caring and giving approach to her patients and her peers, according to a release from the hospital. She willingly accepts any assignment and, often, goes above and beyond in working “overtime” or volunteering to accompany patients during transfer situations. Stacy is a member of the Nursing Practice Council where she “participates in the design, development and implementation of policies, procedures and projects which enhance the patient experience at Milford Hospital.

“Milford Hospital nurses give their all in providing high quality health care to all of our patients. Cristina, Gemma, Melissa and Stacy truly represent the highest caliber of caregivers and they reflect the compassion and commitment of Milford Hospital nurses as a whole,” Pelaccia, said.
