Armed Carjacking In Waterbury Leads To Pursuit, Crash In Naugatuck: Police

The victim was sitting in his vehicle when a carjacker approached with a firearm, according to police.

WATERBURY, CT — A robber displayed a firearm at a male motorist Sunday afternoon and stole his vehicle, according to police.

The victim, who had been sitting inside his vehicle when the robber approached, was not injured, according to Lt. Ryan Bessette.

The carjacking happened around 3:33 p.m. in the area of Pine and Bishop streets.

Police later located the stolen vehicle around 5:47 p.m. Sunday near South Main Street and Platts Mill Road. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to pull over, which led to a pursuit onto Route 8 southbound, according to Bessette.

The vehicle got off the highway near Great Hill Road in Naugatuck, where the driver subsequently lost control and crashed into a wall, police said.

Two adults, one male and one female, were taken into custody. Neither was injured in the crash, according to police.

Police identified the driver as Juwan Butler, 28, and the passenger as Adrianna Carrasquillo, 20, both of Waterbury. Police said they recovered a firearm and drugs from the vehicle.

Butler was charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree threatening, reckless driving, engaging police in pursuit, illegal transfer of a firearm, criminal possession of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, possession of drug paraphernalia, carrying a pistol without a permit, interfering with/ resisting an officer, criminal negligent storage of a firearm, larceny of a motor vehicle - second offense, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, illegal possession of weapons in a motor vehicle, and four counts of possession with intent to sell narcotics.

Butler is a convicted felon, and he is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition, according to police. Butler was held on a $1.5 million bond and is due to be arraigned in Superior Court in Waterbury Monday.

Carrasquillo was charged with interfering with/resisting an officer, possession with intent to sell marijuana, and conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery,

Carrasquillo was held on a $500,000 bond, and she is also scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
