After Mass Layoffs, Waterbury Company Announces Even More Layoffs

The May notice updates an April layoff notification provided to the state.

WATERBURY, CT — Feeney Brothers Excavation notified the state on Friday it has to lay off an additional nine employees.

In mid-April, the Dorchester, Massachusetts-based company submitted a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice to the state Department of Labor that it had to cut 37 positions at its 137 East Aurora St. facility.

The additional nine employees brings the total number of staffing cuts there to 46.

The utility construction company indicated it needed to make the cuts after it lost its contract with Eversource, which was one of its largest.

"Feeney Brothers was unable to provide more notice of this action because these circumstances were not reasonably foreseeable as Feeney Brothers understood Eversource would continue working with it in some capacity," the company wrote back in April.

The latest notice indicates the nine additional workers include one driver, four foremen, two operators, and two laborers.

“Since the first notice, Feeney Brothers has continued to review its operational needs and is terminating the employment of an additional nine (9) employees today, May 2, 2025,” the letter states.
