Driver Hits Utility Pole, Car In DUI Crash: Naugatuck Police

The 20-year-old driver, who appeared intoxicated, fled on foot and was apprehended after a brief pursuit, police said.

NAUGATUCK, CT — A motorist faces numerous charges after the vehicle he was driving struck a utility pole and a parked car, according to authorities.

Mauricio Alziphat, 20, of Naugatuck, is charged with driving under the influence, evading responsibility, traveling unreasonably fast and failure to drive in the proper lane, police said.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning at the intersection of Buckingham, North Church and Bradbury streets, where a 2007 Mercury hit a pole, splitting it in half, and continued across a driveway, striking a car parked on the lawn of a home, before coming to rest in a wooded area, according to police.

Alziphat fled on foot and was apprehended on Hillside Avenue after a brief pursuit, police said, adding he appeared intoxicated and refused medical attention.

Road closures are anticipated for repairs, according to police.
