Eight Scholarships Awarded to Former UCLL Players

Union City Little League Baseball and Union City, Naugatuck Softball are pleased to announce that they were able to hand out eight scholarships to former UCLL players on Thursday at Awards Night at Naugatuck High School.

Scholarship committee member Paul Singley wrote this and wanted to read it at the Awards Night, but had to coach a game so could not make it. Congrats to all.

Every year at Union City Little League, we welcome hundreds of children onto our fields to learn a game, make a few friends and have some fun along the way. Whether they choose to play baseball or softball beyond Little League, our hope is that all of these children will become lifelong fans of the game and that they will forever use the lessons they learn on our diamonds - lessons like sportsmanship, how to overcome obstacles and the value of hard work. We also try to uphold the mission of Little League International, which is to teach life lessons that build stronger individuals and communities. And when we look at the students receiving our scholarship tonight, it is clear those lessons have been learned. They are strong individuals, not only physically but mentally and morally, as well. And there is no doubt we are a stronger community because of these individuals.

This award is named in honor of longtime volunteer Fred Sokoloski, who coached youth sports and also served as a burgess in Naugatuck. He was someone who could be counted on to help the future of the Borough, and he certainly would be proud of the individuals receiving this honor.
