ICYMI: Case Involving Naugatuck Landlords May Change the Way State Agency Pursues Housing Disputes

Bill and Mary Luth say they were over-aggressively pursued for a settlement by the state Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities.

NAUGATUCK, CT β€” Bill and Mary Luth, landlords in Naugatuck, say they were pursued for a settlement by the state Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities to the point of harassment following a fair housing complaint against them.

Now their experience may change the way the commission pursues such cases in the future, if the Connecticut Property Owners Alliance can convince lawmakers to change the agency's behavior, reports the Waterbury Republican-American.

The couple say they were forced to settle the case with the commission, after four years, because the agency threatened to take the case to the state Supreme Court. The property owners alliance says the case is a prime example of the overzealous nature of the commission and reforms are desperately needed.
