Man Charged In Slaying Of Waterbury Teen: Police

The 17-year-old victim was fatally shot on Willow Street in July, according to police.

WATERBURY, CT — Police on Friday arrested a city man for the July 11 murder of 17-year-old Carizma Fox.

Lt. Ryan Bessette said police charged Shamar Atwater, 40, of Waterbury, with murder.

Atwater is being held on a $3 million bond, and he is due to be arraigned in Superior Court on Monday.

Police arrested Atwater at a residence on Sunny Lane in Watertown while executing a search warrant.

The Connecticut State Police Violent Crimes Task Force and the Watertown Police Department assisted Waterbury police.

Police said they took the suspect into custody without incident.

Atwater is also accused of criminal use of a weapon, unlawful discharge of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, and illegal sale or transfer of pistols/revolvers.

Waterbury police had secured an arrest warrant for Atwater in July.

Fox, a Waterbury resident, died after being shot on Willow Street. According to Bessette, a preliminary investigation revealed there was a disturbance outside involving a group of people, which led to the shooting.

Fox has been remembered by her family as someone with a personality that could “light up any room.” She was known for her wit, sense of humor, and how she would try to cheer people up when they were down, according to her obituary.
