Man In Waterbury Captivity Case In ‘Next Phase Of Recovery’
An organization raising money to help pay for the man's ongoing medical expenses gave an update on his condition this week.

WATERBURY, CT — A man who police say was held captive for 20 years is now “medically stable” and moving forward with physical rehabilitation, according to a local nonprofit organization.
Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury Inc., which helps victims of domestic violence, has an ongoing GoFundMe fundraiser to help the man.
In an update Monday, the organization posted that the man is “ready for his next step in treatment…He is medically stable and ready to transition to the next phase of his recovery.”

While Medicaid will cover some medical costs, it won’t cover everything, according to the organization.
The man’s legs “need extra attention,” due to years of malnourishment and confinement, the post said.

“We are asking for financial donations that can be used to cover the cost of his care while healing,” the update said.
In addition to medical expenses, money raised in the GoFundMe campaign will help pay for the man’s dental care, counseling, therapy, housing, daily living expenses and legal fees.
As of Tuesday at 4 p.m., the campaign had raised $215,634 of its latest goal of $240,000 through about 3,800 contributions.
The man was rescued following a Feb. 17 fire at 2 Blake St. According to police, the 32-year-old man, who weighed just 68 pounds, told them he purposely set the house on fire because he wanted freedom. He told police his stepmother, Kimberly Sullivan, 56, had been holding him captive in the house since he was about 11 years old.
Sullivan faces charges of first-degree assault, second-degree kidnapping, first-degree unlawful restraint, cruelty to persons and first-degree reckless endangerment. She has denied wrongdoing through her legal counsel, and she entered a “not guilty” plea in court. Sullivan is next due to appear in court on April 22.
