Naugatuck's Former Peter Paul Candy Factory To Be Auctioned

The candy factory, which has been defunct since 2007, will be sold after seven years of vacancy.

The former Peter Paul candy factory property will be auctioned off on Sept. 25 with an opening bid of $2.2 million, according to the Republican-American.

The 36-acre property, owned by Hershey Corp. and located at 889 New Haven Road, will be sold in an online auction. Hershey, Peter Paul’s parent company, has reportedly been trying to sell the former manufacturing site of candy bars like Mounds and Almond Joy, but has not accepted any offers.

Local officials reportedly said there have been offers between $2 and $4 million since 2007, but Hershey is sticking closer to its most recent asking price of $7.4 million.

The factory has been vacant since Hershey moved production of Almond Joy and Mounds to a plant in Stuarts Draft, Va., in November 2007, the paper reports. All of the company’s workers – more than 200 – were laid off in the process.

The Zoning Commission zoned the property for commercial use in 2007, switching it from industrial zoning.
