Woman Shot Multiple Times In Waterbury Domestic Dispute: Police

Police have charged a city man in connection with the domestic violence shooting, police said.

WATERBURY, CT — A city woman is in critical condition Friday after being shot multiple times on Thursday night, according to police.

Police arrested John Irizary, 56, of Waterbury for the shooting, which police said was a domestic violence incident.

According to police, they responded to 210 Berkeley Ave. Thursday night around 10:56 p.m. on a report of an assault.

Police found a 44-year-old woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel transported her to a local hospital. As of Friday, she was listed in critical, but stable condition, police said.

Irizary is in a relationship with the woman and the two share a child, according to Lt. Ryan Bessette.

Their 22-year-old son heard the gunshots, called 911, fled the residence and sought help. The son was not injured, according to police.

Police said a firearm was recovered at the scene. Irizary, a convicted felon, did not possess a valid Connecticut pistol permit and is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition, police said. Irizary was arrested inside the residence.

Police charged him with criminal attempt at murder, first-degree assault, tampering with evidence, illegal discharge of a firearm, criminal use of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a pistol/revolver, and criminal possession of a firearm/ammunition.

Irizary is being held on $1 million bond and is due to be arraigned in Superior Court in Waterbury Friday.
