New Canaan Animal Reports: Reuniting Lost Pets and Owners

Maryann Kleinschmitt talks about the importance of registering and vaccinating beloved pets.

New Canaan Animal Control stressed to town residents the importance of registering pets with the town and keeping updated pet information on the animal after several dogs were successfully reunited with their owners recently.

Officer Maryann Kleinschmitt said, on April 7 at approximately 12:15 a.m., a chocolate lab was found roaming loose on Country Club Road. She said the dog was licensed but the dog didn't have tags on it, so the owner couldn't be contacted, Kleinschmitt said.

The dog was impounded briefly, Kleinschmitt said, which costs owners $15. Beyond the initial 24-hour period, the fee raises to $25 per day for boarding fees. The owner eventually retrieved the dog from the pound, according to Kleinschmitt, who said a bonus to keeping tags on dogs is, if the animal lives close by, animal control will often return the animal to its home.

She also pointed out an incident where keeping tags on the animal benefitted everyone. Also on April 7 at approximately 4:50 p.m., New Canaan Animal Control received a call from a Fairfield resident about a Shepherd mix recovered with New Canaan tags, police said.

Kleinschmitt was able to provide the called with the owner's information because the of the dog's registration number on the tag, and the New Canaan resident, who had been visiting family in Fairfield, was able to be contacted and retrieved the animal.

On Friday, April 19, animal control was able to contact the owner of another dog, Samantha, after she was recovered roaming along White Oak Lane near the Merritt Parkway by a passerby. See the video above for Kleinschmitt's message.
