New Canaan Modern Historical Homes Receive Recognition

Those who appreciate the architectural side of New Canaan will notice a number of homes in the area now being recognized as homes of the modern movement, thanks to new informational plaques being installed.

The historic homes, of 100 years or older, have oval plaques explaining the history of the house. The modern homes will now be graced by a plaque to show off New Canaan's storied architectural heritage. Many of the modern homes also appear on the National Register of Historic Places.

"One of the things we hope to accomplish with the plaquing is to call attention to the importance of these homes, all of which have been thoroughly researched," said New Canaan Historical Society Executive Director Janet Lindstrom. "Plaquing is important because it shows a home has a history.".

The plaques designate homes designed by architects like Marcel Breuer, Eliot Noyes, John Johansen, Landis Gores, Philip Johnson and Victor Christ-Janer.

The New Canaan Historical Society approached New Canaan resident Alan Goldberg, FAIA, to design the plaques for modern homes, which were all constructed before 1980 and have been published in an architecture journal, included in one of New Canaan’s Modern house tours or are listed in the Modern Homes Survey.
