Iconic 70-Year-Old Diner Up For Sale In Newington: Real Estate Listing

The Olympia Diner has been a favorite stop for both locals and tourists for decades where scenes from Hollywood films have even been shot.

NEWINGTON, CT — The Olympia Diner, an iconic 70-year-old Newington eatery where scenes from Hollywood films and other media have been filmed, was recently listed for sale.

A real estate listing indicates the diner, located at 3413 Berlin Turnpike on the corner of Pane Road, is available for sale or ground lease.

The property consists of one acre of commercial land and is "situated within the most sought after corridor of the turnpike," according to the listing.

The property also offers a "drive-thru opportunity" in an area of both high visibility and high traffic. It also has a number of proposed uses, including auto repair, bank, fast food, restaurant and supermarket, according to the listing.

Crafted by the famed Jerry O'Mahony Diner Company of New Jersey, the Olympia originally opened in Massachusetts but was brought to Newington in 1954.

It is known as the "longest stainless steel diner in the country" and has been owned by three families throughout its history: the Kritikos, Goulias and Gavrilis families, the latter of which have owned the "OD" since 1974, according to the diner's website.

In addition to commercials and public service announcements, scenes from movies such as "Jacknife" (1989) starring Robert DeNiro, Promises in the Dark (1979) starring Marsha Mason and Once More With Feeling (2009) with Chazz Palminteri were filmed at the diner.

Diners can enjoy breakfast favorites anytime, including a wide list of omelettes and pancakes, as well as diner favorites like pot roast, meatloaf, fried chicken, roast stuffed turkey and beef liver and onions. The OD also boasts a wide range of Italian specialities, sandwiches and desserts.

The diner is open Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. All seating ends 15 minutes before closing time.
