Massive Layoffs Planned At Newington Manufacturer

NEWINGTON, CT — A manufacturer of window, doors, facades and shading systems for buildings announced Monday that economic difficulties will result in layoffs at the Newington site.

Schuco USA, which is based at 240 Pane Road, Newington, announced Monday it is laying off 95 employees in its fabrication unit in Newington, according to a written notice sent to the state Department of Labor.

In the notice, sent by Schuco Human Resources Manager Laura J. Sprague, the company cited the ongoing geopolitical, post-pandemic economic issues that have impacted the world economically.

"After several difficult years of business with supply chain interruptions, inflation, geopolitical challenges and the unprecedented disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Schuco has made the difficult decision to downsize its fabrication unit by the end of 2023, keeping only the wholesale division," wrote Sprague.

She also disclosed to the state the notice sent to employees of the bad news.

According to that notice, Newington's impacts are part of a larger, company-wide reduction in staff being planned this year.

It states pink slips will be distributed "at least" 60 days after the April 3 notice, with additional layoffs expected through Dec. 31.

The company said of the 95 employees to be laid off, at least 50 of them are full-time workers and those layoffs will be "permanent in nature," according to the notice.

In addition, the notice states layoffs are not based on seniority and workers cannot "bump" other employees based on seniority.

Schuco USA, which is headquartered in Newington, is part of a larger, worldwide company called Schuco International, with that company's roots being in Germany, dating back 70 years.
