Newington Eatery's Sandwich Team Among Best In Country

The trio recently took home second-place in a national company competition featuring sandwich-makers nationwide.

NEWINGTON, CT — A visit to the Newington Jersey Mike's sandwich shop at 12B Fenn Road might just get you a sub made by some of the company's best sandwich makers.

That's because, "after an intense battle," Team Connecticut West — a three-person team from the Newington Jersey Mike’s — came in second place nationally in the recent Jersey Mike’s Subs G13 Sub Making Championship in Orlando, Fla.

The second-place team was comprised of Newington shop employees David Viveiros, Angie Echevarria, and Tom Dumansky.

A team from Frederick, Md., took home the title and coveted trophy, which was presented by Jersey Mike’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer Peter Cancro.

The event drew a cheering crowd of more than 3,200 at the company's national conference.

Newington's squad competed against six other finalist teams from throughout the country, including another Connecticut squad from Glastonbury's Jersey Mike's.

In a close contest, Team Connecticut West secured second place, while Team Massachusetts rounded out the top three in third.

"Jersey Mike’s created the G13 Competition to reinforce the importance of safety, brand quality and speed of service with the company’s team members," wrote Jersey Mike's in a statement.

"G refers to Giant, the size of the sub competitors make, and 13 refers to the company’s most popular sub, #13 The Original Italian."

The teams competed on March 16 at Jersey Mike’s National Conference in Orlando, where franchise owners, managers, and others gathered to celebrate the company's 69th anniversary.

The winners competed against nearly 3,000 teams from across the country.

The Manasquan, N.J., national chain has more than 3,000 shops nationwide, with 43 in Connecticut.
