$30 Million Project Pitched For Site Of Collapsed New London Church

The mixed-use development would add housing and commercial space to the downtown site.

NEW LONDON, CT — Plans call for a mixed-use project with 46 apartments to take the place of a historic downtown church after its collapse earlier this year, The Day of New London reported.

The proposal comes from the Eastern Connecticut Housing Opportunities group, which wants to build a $30 million, four-story structure. The building would include 3,487 square feet of office/commercial space in addition to a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments.

The project is on the agenda for the Dec. 5 Planning & Zoning Commission meeting.

The site is at 66 Union St., the former location of First Congregational Church, which collapsed in January. The building dated back to the 1600s.

New London Mayor Michael Passero told Connecticut Public Radio that the church was "one of the oldest and certainly one of the most gorgeous religious structures in the city.”

The building was home to Engaging Heaven Church at the time of the collapse. That church announced earlier this fall that it was moving to the Second Congregational Church at 45 Broad St.
