The home was built in 1790 and replaced an earlier home that burned during Benedict Arnold's 1781 raid of the city, according to Historic Buildings of Connecticut.

Charles Bulkeley was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and a sea captain.

For many years the property was home to Bulkeley House Restaurant, a seafood eatery with water views and an outdoor patio.
