Fill The Spot: 16 Huntington Street
St. Mary Star of the Sea School closed last year. What should the building be used for?

Tucked into the shadow of the towering St. Mary Star of the Sea Church is a three-story brick building that until recently served as one of two private Catholic schools in New London.
The K-8 school, first established in 1892, hasn't been forgotten. A 50th anniversary reunion is scheduled for this month for those who graduated in 1963 and 1964. But St. Mary's School won't have a Class of 2013 to get together in 50 years; the school graduated its last class in 2012.
St. Mary's was closed by a decision of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Norwich, which also shut down a school in Rockville. At the time, St. Mary's was running a quarter-million dollar deficit. More recently, the school's supplies were liquidated in a public sale.
New London has not always been able to repurpose a disused school (we featured the Edgerton School in a Fill The Spot once) but across the city there have also been examples of school buildings finding new life. They have been converted into courthouses, office spaces, new schools, and even residences.
